And the Nominees Are…

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas —  Awards Season! And this year I am particularly excited to see how things unfold due to the unpredictability in film. With so many top-notch contenders out there, there’s no Daniel Day Lewis/Matthew McConaughey-esque inevitable win this year. Even the nominees for this year’s Golden Globes could be considered surprising with Christopher Nolan’s epic Interstellar (which was clearly made with a slew of awards in mind) only getting nominated for its score.

It’s enough to make a cynical film critic feel that ray of hope — that this year could, in fact, be different, and, dare I say it, actually interesting?

Admittedly there are still many films I need to see before offering up concrete opinions on all of this year’s nominees, but the fact that Boyhood was so prominently represented on the list for the Golden Globes was enough to put me at ease. It was also nice to see The Grand Budapest Hotel on the list when it could have easily been forgotten since it came out nine months ago.

The Best Actress in a Drama category proves you don’t have to be either a previous nominee nor in a nominated film to receive recognition, and Julianne Moore got two times the leverage by being nominated in the Comedy/Musical category as well.

The Supporting Actor category proves that even smashing your head into a mirror doesn’t necessarily earn you a nomination as Channing Tatum's role in Foxcatcher was noticeably missing. Gone Girl didn’t get a Best Picture - Drama nomination, but did score in the Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Director categories.

Basically, buckle up and get ready for awards season, which will surely have more notable twists and turns than Interstellar, which (have I already mentioned?) was only nominated once.
