The Skeleton Twins Review

Grade: C+
One-Liner: Instead of twins could Bill Hader just have his own movie?

Those with siblings might be able to attest that sometimes you have to share the spotlight in order to make them feel  better about themselves. Clearly that's what Bill Hader was doing with Kristen Wiig in The Skeleton Twins. The Bridemaids alum's latest attempt at tackling drama and proving she's more than the Target lady fell flat. Wiig played the moody, surprisingly slutty two-dimensional Maggie who spends her days forcing herself to like her doofy husband Lance (Luke Wilson in a jocular guest spot). And Hader managed to produce his funniest, most poignant performance to date as Maggie's judgmental and dramatic twin brother Milo.

The film leaked out hints at the pair's troubled upbringing after dropping the bomb that the twins hadn't spoken in 10 years. Eventually a perfunctory reason behind the falling out is produced, but it's not enough to make up for the unseen lost time. Hader and Wiig's chemistry is surprisingly lacking after the pair spent years together on SNL, and not to point fingers .... but it's entirely Wiig's fault.

Trying to show that deep down these two were, in fact, linked, director Craig Johnson tossed in some cliche '80s-inspired montages that included Milo and Maggie lip syncing to Jefferson Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now," a hazy slow dance at a Halloween party, and a scene where the two characters get high off laughing gas and share some dark secrets.

Ultimately it wasn't enough to convince me that they were bonded for life, or even for the few weeks they lived together in the film. The 93 minutes dragged in some places as Maggie's internal struggle about having children and cheating on her husband played out to its thoroughly tedious conclusion.

However, if Hader's performance is any indication of what's to come for him, we can expect great things.
